Michael Jackson Invincible Mandatory Michael #002

This week, I’m going to address some of that bad press that Invincible got. Overall, it’s not as good as some of his older material. The biggest problem this album has is with it’s production. The sound had way too much going on in some of the songs (Heartbreaker/2000 Watts) and it put a lot of listeners off. The stuff that was more stripped down and more easily digested (Heaven Can Wait/Butterflies) was way better received by listeners and critics. The last thing that really hurt it was that it kind of drags on near the end. I agree with that criticism too. There were too many ballads towards the end (Speechless/The Lost Children) and it just starts to feel like it’s dragging on towards the end. All that aside, that doesn’t necessarily mean the songs aren’t any good.

Is he still a thriller?

Tag Team #004

ti bob s Tag Team #004

If people keep comparing B.o.B to Andre 3k, we might have a problem on our hands. T.I.P. and B.o.B may not be as seamless as Outkast is, but they have an undeniable chemistry. The way they work together is even similar. At the same time, it sounds like they’re working against eachother and competing. It adds an interesting twist to their music. They even joke about it themselves in my favorite song by them, “I’m That Nigga”.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

They only have five songs together so far, but B.o.B is just starting to carve out his niche and make a name for himself. He had a hell of a year last year and if T.I. can stay out of trouble, he and his protege’ can make some more amazing hits for us.

The Essence Tag Team #003

After AZ scored the only guest spot on the legendary Illmatic and arguably outshined Nas in his “Life’s a Bitch” verse, the careers of both grew pretty quickly. The two became New York legends, Nas being the obviously more renowned of the two. I’m not a huge fan of AZ, but Nas brings out the best in him and vice versa. From “The Essence” to “The Flyest”, whenever they work together they produce east coast classics. They even produced some nice tracks as part of The Firm, even though that group wasn’t a success. I don’t consider these guys in tag team title contention due to their lack of material in recent years, though. They’re more an honorable mention.

adidas originals redman methodman recap 1 499x333 Tag Team #002

It would be an unforgivable sin to think about who the new champs are without mentioning these guys in the contention. In many ways, they’re the Godfathers of stoner rap. They may not have been first to do it, but they sure did make it popular and successful. On the flip side, they have their no nonsense street tales too. If it’s one thing these guys have, it’s street cred. That’s where they stay at and they ain’t gonna leave. Another thing that makes them more prolific and credible is their consistency. Never to be ones to changed by a switch in trends, they keep it street in their sound and their lyrics.

A decade, two albums, a mixtape, and several features on each other’s various solo and projects later, they’re still going strong and considered legends in this rap game. Currently, they’re working on their third album together, Blackout 3.
