Tech Junkie

PC World tested 3G and 4G wireless data transfer speeds–indoors and out–for AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon, at multiple locations in 13 major cities. Here’s what they found.

It’s been a year since we looked closely at wireless service in the United States, and in the interim that service has changed considerably–mostly in positive ways. The industry is in the midst of another major technology transition, this time moving from a 3G world to a 4G one while trying to grasp the implications, realize the opportunities, and deal with the growing pains. All of this should be good (even fun!) for consumers, and it could lead to a lot of cool, superfast, reasonably priced devices.

In this year’s study, we took snapshot measurements of wireless service in 13 cities–Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New Orleans, New York, San Francisco, San Jose, Seattle, and Washington, D.C.–across the country to get a real-time view of how the 3G-to-4G transition is progressing, and of which companies are currently delivering on the promised faster speeds.

motorolanerdalert1 Motorolla Goes Ham at CES, Releases New Tablet and Phones

Looking to up its market share and go head-to-head with the big boys, Motorola dropped three new products at this year’s Consumer Electronic Show. The maker of Verizon’s Droid dropped two new smartphones, the Droid Bionic, and the super-powerful, dual-core-processor-powered Atrix. Then it went ahead and announced its Xoom tablet, which is running Google’s yet-to-be-released Android 3.0 “Honeycomb” software. Do we smell a massacre? Eh, not really, but we’re amped nonetheless.

Reports have the iPhone going to Verizon in early February. [Cult of Mac]

www.engadget 500x433 Sleek By 50 Cent Wireless Headphones Official Press Photos

What’s this? Wouldn’t you like to know. Now that Dr. Dre and HP have teamed up to strike gold in the consumer audio space, it looks as if Sleek Audio is doing its darnedest to replicate success. Sleek — which tickled our ears quite pleasantly with last year’s SA1 — is apparently gearing up to unveil something special here at CES. Mum’s the word on what, exactly, but judging by the image above, we’re assuming it’ll be a pair of high-end wireless (Kleer?) headphones with the backing of 50 Cent. You’ll also notice a svelte carbon fiber exterior, which ought to flex just right as the low-lows are passing through its drivers. Head on past the break for the full image, and keep it locked right here as we dig for more.
