DJ Drama ft. J. Cole & Chris Brown – “Undercover” Another track leak off of Dj Drama’s album Third Power.
I must say J. Cole’s album is the most anticipated in my eyes, next to Drake’s “Take Care”. People who attended the listening session for the “Cole World” album were very impressed. I am hearing the album maybe a classic. Hopefully, this mixtape will hold you over until the album drops.
Ten-years after its release, Jay-Z’s The Blueprint, is still mentioned amongst the best hip-hop albums of all time. Impacting rappers just as much as fans, the project played a big part in J.Cole’s coming-of-age.
One of my favorite joints on the album was “All I Need” and “Never Change” was classic.
Is J. Cole losing his buzz? I know I am ready for his debut album to drop. Hopefully, he doesn’t end up like another NY rapper who had a tremendous buzz a few years back, shoutout to Papoose. They need to hurry and drop his album. I heard it was a classic, but we’ll see. In the mean time, check out this mixtape “Cole World Order”.

The Biz: I gotta say I’m really feelin’ the fact that more educated brothers are getting involved in or openly supporting hip-hop. I was really blown away when I heard that J. Cole has a college degree and even more blown away when Obama casually talked about having Jay-Z in his ipod. That was just bananas. Now, I find myself listening to someone that comes from the same place I do that was once a middle school teacher. What do you think of this shift? Is this something you think is going to become more popular in contemporary hip-hop?
Dee-1: Yes. I know that whatever trend proves to be successful will inspire more people like that to come behind it. Look at the style Kanye came in the game with. He inspired a bunch of other rappers after him who had similar styles, stories, and fashion preferences. So I am glad that I am helping to restore some balance to hip hop. We need it.
The Biz: Another question: How did you transition from being a teacher to being a full fledged emcee anyway?
Dee-1: I had to become way more business minded because being an emcee became my only means for paying my bills. So I was forced to think as both an artist and a businessman. Asking myself “How can I get my name out there AND make some money at the same time so these lights don’t get cut off. Lol.”
The Biz: You’ve inspired some articles I’ve written about misogyny and the way women are portrayed and treated in hip-hop. I really dig your approach to these topics. It’s rare that someone expresses positivity the way you do. Even most “conscious” rappers are guilty of throwing them under the bus. For some strange reason, that’s what seems to sell. What gave you the confidence to present your message the way you do despite how unpopular it seems to be?
