Jay Z thinks marijuana has made hip-hop more ‘mellow’.
The ’99 Problems’ hitmaker believes the genre has changed over the years to become less intense, and thinks that is due to the drug consumption of some of his peers.
He said: ‘Public Enemy were a great force in the 80s. Chuck D was a powerful speaker and a great thinker. The intensity of life on the street in the 80s is right there in that mix. Hip hop sounds get mellower in the 90s, when people started smoking more weed.’
The 40-year-old star also admitted movies have been a huge influence on his music as they helped him make sense of the crime-ridden area of New York he grew up in.
He told Q magazine: ‘I think films are a major influence on any rapper. One of the ways you deal with your surroundings is almost to imagine you are in a drama on the big screen. It sounds crazy but it can help you survive to see yourself in terms of a story.
‘You could write a whole book on what hip hop has taken from ‘The Godfather’ and ‘Scarface’ and all those gangster films.’
Ten-years after its release, Jay-Z’s The Blueprint, is still mentioned amongst the best hip-hop albums of all time. Impacting rappers just as much as fans, the project played a big part in J.Cole’s coming-of-age.
One of my favorite joints on the album was “All I Need” and “Never Change” was classic.
Damn. Cole World. Just days before Weezy’s highly anticipated Carter 4 was set to drop, the album found its way online and became available to the world via free download.
Be clear: The Carter 4 is out. Unofficially. And if illegal downloads counted toward moved units, there’s a very good chance its headed toward gold at this very moment.
Speaking of gold status, Watch The Throne recently earned a gold plaque — nearly two weeks after its release. Considering there was no leak up to the night of its release, many expected it would sell alot more, alot sooner.
Drake answered the question cleverly, stating that he is neutral. How does President Carter feel about this? Will he pull a Curtis Jackson and say that Drake’s need to ride or die with him no matter what?
Here’s the instrumental invasion featuring all Just Blaze instrumentals. Just Blaze is the producer responsible for Jay-Z’s classic album “The Blueprint”. He gave Rocafella that signature sound. Just Blaze is still one of the top producers in the game. I couldn’t find the tracklist for this one, so just check it out and enjoy!!
Affion Crockett plays JAY-Z, KANYE WEST, LIL WAYNE, & CORY GUNZ in this promo spoof for his TV show “IN THE FLOW”, airing Sunday August 14th at 9pm on FOX. Damaine Radcliff guest stars as FREEWAY. John O. Nelson stars as Peter Gunz. Ivonnah Erskine on guitar.
While a release date for Jay-Z and Kanye West’s highly-anticipated Watch the Throne album may not be set in stone, a partial tracklist from the project has leaked online.
Based on a Monday (June 6) morning leak, Hov and Ye only have one track with featured guest appearances.
1. ‘Lift Off’ feat. Beyonce & Bruno Mars 2. ‘Murder to Excellence’ 3. ‘Illest Motherf—er Alive’ 4. ‘Why I Love You So (Guilt Trip)’ 5. ‘That S— Crazy’ 6. ‘Living So Italian’ 7. ‘Who Gonna Stop Me’ 8. ‘Whole Lifetime’ 9. ‘We Are Young’ 10. ‘Anthem’ (The Boom Box)
While initially presented as a speculated list, confirmation on the tracks’ authenticity has also emerged.
This just in: the Watch The Throne tracklisting floating around this morning via DOTR is in fact real. The highly anticipated joint project between Ye and Jay, which was said to see the light of day around March looks like it’s getting the finishing touches because a source EXTREMELY close to the project just confirmed with me these song titles are legit, however more songs are said to be added. (You Heard That New)
Rumors of Beyonce and Bruno Mars’ presence on the LP circulated over the Internet last month.
If you thought “H.A.M” sucked and thought that Watch The Thronething wasn’t happening anymore, think again. Kanye West and Jay-Z are preparing for “Lift Off,” the first single from their highly anticipated long-awaited collaborative album, and have snatched up Beyoncé and Bruno Mars for the Jeff Bhasker-produced number impacting radio and your iTunes music library sooner than you think. Yeah, that definitely explains the random trips to Paris. (Complex)
Producer Young Guru provided fans with an update on the LP in March.
“Right now, I’m really trying to get Jay and Kanye to hurry up and finish this Watch The Throne album because the world needs to hear it,” Guru said in an interview. “It just needs little tweaks and things like that. But the core of the album is finished…Kanye takes what [contributing producers do] and adds on to it and I think that’s his genius. I say this all the time ‘Kanye records are never the same twice, while he’s making them because they always grow.” (VIBE)
